![]() ![]() The only problem with this switch in focus is that I honestly liked reading about them a lot more than the twins, Desiree and Stella. Part II of the book focuses more on Jude, Desiree’s dark-skinned, track-running daughter, and her friend, Reese. Those three, in my opinion, had the best character developments in the book.Įach part of the story focuses on different characters and certain parts of the timeline. I particularly enjoyed reading about a few special characters, like Early, Jude, and Reese. There were times when I was a little bored, but usually the plot would liven up again after a few pages. ![]() What The Vanishing Half gets right: This book is all about leading double lives and how they affect your relationships. As the book explains: “Stella became white and Desiree married the darkest man she could find.” Desiree ends up coming back with her daughter to her hometown of Mallard, a Southern town with a very unique kind of history from there, she slowly begins to rebuild her life and look for her estranged sister. ![]() Stella chooses to pass for being white, and Desiree does not. The Vanishing Half is about two Black twins, Stella and Desiree, who run away from home as teenagers and start new lives in the 1960s. This 2020 bestselling novel won the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction. For our first book club pick of 2021, the library ladies chose The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. ![]()
